The clock strikes twelve. Someone lets out an excited yelp as the movie theater guy comes to the door. The crowd wiggles in anticipation. They hold their breath as the door clicks open. It’s crazy. A sea of people wash through the door. They’re running to the entrance. The ticket lady fakes a calm expression. In reality, she’s terrified for her life. After all, this is a big night. She hurriedly tells them which theater to go to and takes their tickets. After about 20 minutes of movie trailers, the lights begin to dim. The screen widens. The crowd cheers for a moment then gets silent. They lean forward as New Moon begins.
“The line was wrapped all around the mall,” junior Angela Garcia said. “The line was inside the mall all the way to Dillard’s and outside all the way to Buffalo Wild Wing’s.”
While there was a massive amount of people to get into the midnight premiere, plenty of people decided to wait to see the movie.
“No, I’m not going [to the premiere],” senior Micki Wear said. “It was sold out.”
Some were obviously more excited than others.
“I got there at seven and sat there in line for four hours,” Garcia said.
Although everyone was anxious and tired of waiting in line, it was something that came along with the premiere of New Moon.
“A fight actually broke out,” Garcia said. “They cut in line. The cops showed up to break it up. It was horrible. Even if you went to the bathroom and had someone hold your place, people argued about it.”
It wasn’t just in line that people got agitated and overly excited.
“The cops stayed in the theater and made sure everyone stayed seated,” Garcia said. “Once you got into the theater, if you got up, you lost your seat. The worst part is that you couldn’t get up until the movie started or you’d have to find another seat, possibly one away from your friends. This one girl actually sat in her boyfriend’s lap the whole time so she could sit by him.”
This was a “crazy” night. A lot of people were psyched for the New Moon movie, but it wasn’t necessarily the most popular book.
“[My favorite book was] Eclipse,” Wear said. “Because that’s when Edward came back. There was a lot of Edward.”
Seniors Shanice Jennings and Kailey Brown agreed that Twilight, the first book, was their favorite.
“Edward was so passionate,” Brown said. “I pretended I was Bella all four times I read it.”
Jennings said Twilight was “the most interesting” book.
Students weren’t alone in their excitement about the twilight franchise.
“[My favorite was] Breaking Dawn,” attendance clerk Amanda Shirey said. “Because Bella finally gets what she wants.”
Weese and Brown loved the books so much that they read them more than just a couple times.
“I read them all in less than a week,” Brown said. “I even took off a day of work to finish Breaking Dawn.”
Weese said she read the books “only about twenty times”.
Along with their favorite book, they all picked their favorite character as well.
“Edward,” Shirey said. “He just has something about him. I can’t describe it.”
Brown bets that “Jacob’s even sexy in wolf form”.
“When I read the books, I always thought about how sexy and mysterious Jacob seemed,” Weese said.
Jennings and Wear agree that Jacob is “fine” and “cute”.
“Team Edward,” Shirey said. “I like Edward. I like vampires better than any werewolf.”
Every Twilight fan has their own opinion on this subject. Team Edward or Team Jacob?
“Team Jacob,” Weese said. “Hello? Who doesn’t want to date a werewolf?”
Brown, however, couldn’t pick between the two.
“Team Jakeward,” Brown said. “They’re both my boyfriends so don’t make me choose.”
Brown liked the fact that she could “read the books and watch the movie ten thousand times and still not be tired of them,”.
Weese liked “everything”.
“I love how she worded the books,” Weese said. “I love the characters. I love the theme. Everything. I love it all.”
The age old question was asked: Werewolves or vampires?
“Ever since I was a kid, I always loved them [vampires],” Wear said. “But after Twilight, Go Werewolves”
Brown and Weese agreed about the werewolves being better than vampires. However, they had different reasons as to why.
“They still get to be human, but they’re part wolf too. Amazing,” Weese said.
Brown based her opinion on a physical matter.
“Did you see Jacob’s muscles after her turned into a werewolf?” Brown said. “Pretty dang sexy. Duh. Hello?”
Weese, Jennings and Shirey, given the chance, wouldn’t change anything about the books.
Brown and Wear, on the other hand, had the same idea.
“Bella’s name would be Kailey,” Brown said.
Wear said that she would make herself the main character.
“And Jacob would fall for me, not Renesmee,” Wear said.
New Moon Mania has just begun. It is, perhaps, the best thing since Twilight.
