Floral design teacher Ms. Perry teaches her students how to properly assemble a Homecoming mum to be worn in November on Mum Day.

It’s fresh, it’s fragrant, it’s Floral Design.

The class is taught by new Agricultural
Sciences teacher Amber Perry who graduated
from Tarleton State University and was part of the
sorority Phi-Mu.

Perry said she decided to become an agriculture
teacher, because she had an outstanding Ag teacher
when she attended school. Perry loves teaching here
and says it reminds her of the town she grew up in. She
suggested teaching floral design because it was what
she taught in her teacher’s block, and from there the
program was established.

“It’s a lot of responsibility,” Perry said about being a
new teacher. “What I do is impressionable on what they
do.”

One goal Perry has for the program is to give the
students a business skill they can use when they leave
high school. Perry said the floral industry is booming
in today’s society, especially because people need new
floral arrangements on a daily basis.

Another goal Perry has is to get more people interested
in the program. Students say that goal is definitely
being met.

“I think [everyone’s] enjoying it just as much as I am,”
senior Adrian Reilly said. “It’s a lot of fun to experience
together.”

At the moment the class is learning how to make
braids for the mums they sold for homecoming. Those
were ordered until Oct. 9 and will be available by homecoming
in November. Later throughout the year they will
be learning to make different types of arrangements that
can be useful for a variety of events.

There is also a chance that they will be making corsages
for prom, if they can find the appropriate storage for
the flowers.

As the program grows they plan on making more class
periods for Floral Design, but as of right now it’s only
held during 6th period.

Senior Tiffany Thompson explained that in Floral
Design “you get notes, but then you do hands on, so you
know what you’re doing and then you actually get to
do it,” so it’s interactive yet a learning experience at the
same time.
